If anything happens (including a black screen) on Ctrl+Alt+F1 then Xorg has done its part. So this isn't a Xorg bug. The remaining issue sounds like a failure of /bin/login to start, or something related to that.
** Package changed: xorg (Ubuntu) => shadow (Ubuntu) -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to xorg in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1879343 Title: REGRESSION - Ctrl+Alt+F1 no longer gives me access to virtual terminal, just a black screen Status in shadow package in Ubuntu: New Bug description: Ctrl+Alt+F1 used to give you access to a cirtual terminal, or virtual console, not entirely sure what that's called, where you can log in into a shell and run commands. I use that when some of the tons of bugs in Ubuntu makes the system hang so badly that I can't even open a terminal window, in order to figure out if there's a process that I can kill. Then I'd be able to return to the xorg screen with Ctrl+Alt+F7. Now (and even while the system is not hung at all) I'm doing ctrl+Alt+F1, and all I get is a black screen with no console/terminal at all.
