Sorry for the delay.

I disabled all extensions but ubuntu-dock (I need to be able to click on
the grid apps icon to trigger the bug). The delay it still there. Also,
it seems to happen under X11 and under Wayland.

Just to be clear: the multi-second delay happens very few times, and may be
related to another process eating CPU time and/or I/O.
But there is almost always a perceptible delay between pressing the icon and
the spring animation, specially if the animation hasn't been triggered for a
while. May be around half a second or so. It is not a big deal, but it doesn't
feel as smooth as it should be, hence the bug report.

Title:
Big delay between pressing the applications grid icon in dock and the
  start of the spring animation

Status in GNOME Shell:
  Unknown
Status in gnome-shell package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
I am sorry if this is already reported elsewhere, I couldn't find it.

Sometimes there is a big delay between clicking in the applications grid icon
and the start of the spring animation. In the worst cases, this delay can be
close to 2 seconds.
Usually, after this first delay, subsequent clicks on the grid icon show
little to no delay.

I am running Ubuntu 20.04 with default extensions on a Dell XPS 13
  9360.
