On my Thinkpad in Gnome I've chosen "generic 101-key pc" as the keyboard model and "German Dead acute" as the layout. Pressing the key next to the left shift key does not give anything. This key has keycode 94 and is described like this "keycode 94 = less greater bar" in xmodmap.de.
