"package is in a very bad inconsistent state" implies a
bad download and not a bug in Ubuntu.

If this still a problem then in a terminal window:

   sudo apt-get clean
   sudo apt-get update

and then install any updates that are presented to you
and/or attempt to install any other package.

Does that help to resolve your problem?
