Additional observation: If I refresh into FF latest/stable, the undesired line
<include ignore_missing="yes">/etc/fonts/conf.d</include> gets written into ~/snap/firefox/current/.config/fontconfig/fonts.conf. I suppose the reason is that the snap from that channel is linked to gnome-3-38-2004 which has not (yet) been updated in this respect.
