Oh, actually I think this was a side effect of a different problem: I had a USB ethernet dongle attached which, for some reason, was connecting and disconnecting rapidly. So probably the applet tried to refresh every time this happened. I guess ideally it would still be usable even in this situation, but probably this is not really an issue. I'll investigate the ethernet dongle issue separately.
