The downstream patch added by Ubuntu to address this issue is suspected to cause a crash, see lp:2049923.

Basically gnome-terminal provides a scroll bar which is boxed horizontally with the terminal itself, and currently the scrollbar background is not inherited from terminal itself, leading to a white background.
