Title:
  support opening compressed files

Status in Light-Weight Text Editor for Gnome:
  Expired
Status in “gedit” package in Ubuntu:
  Triaged

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: gedit

Some applications can open files that have been gzipped or bzipped. For
example:
  1. Print a page to file (example.pdf, example.ps) from Firefox in Ubuntu 10.04
  2. Gzip & Bzip both files (example.pdf.gz, example.pdf.bz2, example.ps.gz,
example.ps.bz2) using the Nautilus context-menu "Compress..." item.
  3. Observe that all six resulting files are associated with Evince, and can
be opened without trouble.

Inkscape, GIMP and some other applications also support this on
  writing.

Similar functionality is desirable for gedit.
