Bug 1965648 already seems to describe this issue, but also had the wrong

Autorotate initiates but doesn't reset in Wayland sessions (Xorg sessions
work fine)

Title:
Mutter does not switch to landscape mode when folding back to tablet
  mode

Status in Mutter:
  Unknown
Status in mutter package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
I have a convertible HP Elite Book 1030 G3. When I switch to tablet
mode, the screen orientation changes as I rotate the device. When I
fold it back to laptop mode, the screen keeps the last orientation it
  had in tablet mode.

The device should reset to the default orientation when laptop mode is
  entered.

There is also an old bug report on Mutter that describes the same
  problem:

  https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/mutter/-/issues/1917

As a workaround, one can hack together a script that listens for
laptop/tablet changes and resets Mutter via dbus to the desired
  orientation.
