After writing the wrong password three times, the error show and
preserved for a while (with a disabled entry) and then the view is reset
to user selection one.

Title:
GDM Authentication error messages are not shown to the user
Status in gnome-shell package in Ubuntu:
Fix Released
Status in gnome-shell source package in Noble:
Fix Committed
Bug description:
[ Impact ]
If a PAM module returns an error message during authentication (and
it's the last one that the shell allows before resetting) the message
is not presented to the user, but rather the user is sent back to the
user selection page
[ Test case ]
1. On GDM try to login with an user
2. Type the *wrong* user password multiple times
3. After some retries the password field should not accept input anymore
The error message should be presented to the user
4. After some moments (enough to read the text) the user selection page should
be presented again
[ Regression potential ]
We had some dead code due to the wrong variable being referenced, so
now sending messages to a PAM module may be slower if a message is
being shown
