Public bug reported: open firefox. edit > preferences > advanced> general. enable "search for text when i start typing". close preferences. you might need to restart firefox for this setting to take effect.
while looking at a webpage with text, type a word that you see multiple times. the find-as-you-type will highlight the first match. expected behavior: alt+n highlights next match and removes highlighting on previous match. actual behavior: alt+n does nothing. --------------- back story: there used to be two similar features: a full-featured find which was always enabled that the user started using by typing ctrl+f, and a (i believe) equally full-featured, but with less UI junk, thing called quick-find. this was disfavored i guess, and moves were made to get rid of quick find. first i think there was some about:config stuff one could do, then it was modifying some userchrome stuff. now i guess it's just totally gone? (i'd love it if there were a userchrome workaround.) as can be seen in the preferences UI, this is an accessibility issue. people actually use this to browse the web. another reason that it's expected behavior is that the 'N' in 'Next' is underlined, the universal GUI symbol for "alt+(underlined character)" will do this thing. (and i should say, there are lots and lots of examples of this being totally borked all over the place, not just in firefox. it would be super cool if glade/some other GUI-design tool could do some sanity checks. e.g. warn developer if the same letter is underlined twice in one UI segment). another little note: it's definitely alt+n that's supposed to do this, since ctrl+n opens a new firefox window (and is pretty standard GUI shortcut for open a new window, at least in apps that can have multiple windows.) % lsb_release -rd Description: Ubuntu 10.04.3 LTS Release: 10.04 % apt-cache policy firefox firefox: Installed: 10.0+build1-0ubuntu0.10.04.2 Candidate: 10.0+build1-0ubuntu0.10.04.2 Version table: *** 10.0+build1-0ubuntu0.10.04.2 0 500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ lucid-updates/main Packages 500 http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ lucid-security/main Packages 100 /var/lib/dpkg/status 3.6.3+nobinonly-0ubuntu4 0 500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ lucid/main Packages ProblemType: Bug DistroRelease: Ubuntu 10.04 Package: firefox 10.0+build1-0ubuntu0.10.04.2 ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 2.6.32-38.83-generic 2.6.32.52+drm33.21 Uname: Linux 2.6.32-38-generic i686 AddonCompatCheckDisabled: False AlsaVersion: Advanced Linux Sound Architecture Driver Version 1.0.21.
