As stated in my original report, my symptoms are identical. I'm running
Ubuntu 11.10 with LO3.4.5 and have identical issues.

Both my Calc & Writer documents, saved with 8 alphnumeric passwords
under LO 3.4.3 open in Open Office 3.2 with no problem but still will
not open under LO 3.4.5.

I can also not password protect any LO 3.4.5 document/spreadsheet and
get the same error message quoted in this post.
