I guess this has been solved already. When you disconnect from a network
by choosing another network, the name of the new network appears in the
dropdown-list, just above 'Disconnect....'. And because you can see by
the flickering icon that the connection has not been made, you have all
the elements in which you can determine the network status (name +
connection status).

Bug description:
  When choosing another WiFi network with Network Manager instead of the
  one that it tries to connect to there's no visual indication if it
  keeps trying the old one, switched to trying a new one or just didn't
  get the command. A simple stopping and restarting icon animation and a
  notification with relevant text would help the issue.
