LF Desktop Linux Workgroup Conference Call - Agenda 1/30
======
Attendees :

Linux Desktop Marketing
  - Two weeks ago, we had a great conversation and mailing list thread
about Linux Desktop advertising. Our goal would be to create an industry
consortium message and promote it through the press/media. Our
brainstorming resulted in some witty, catchy Linux Desktop marketing
slogans. There were lots of good marketing suggestions on the mailing
list. We should continue to foster that dialog and get more perspective.
When it comes to actually making a decision, Orion Alexander suggested
that we engage with some professionals to honing the message. He
contacted some marketing agencies that might be willing to do pro-bono
work with the LF on this campaign. The first step would be to put a small
group together to define the campaign goals, demographics and continue
that work.

I summarized the first half of the slogan suggestions here:

- Linux Foundation Collaboration Summit

The Linux Foundation Collaboration Summit will be April 8 - 10, 2008. The
format will be similar to last year: April 8th will be a general day with
panels and general discussion and the inclusion of press and analysts.
Days two and three will hold workgroup meetings (such as DAM, LSB, CGL,
etc) and collaboration sessions.

Last year's event sold out quickly. Don't wait, apply to attend this
innovative event today:

DAM will be a main tent event and we shouldn't be constrained by space in
the UT facility.

John will work with Angela/Amanda/Dan on DAM logistics :
    - Build a straw man agenda and presentation tracks
        - OEM Preload Partnership track to discuss the challenges of what
is really required to develop, test and bring a preloaded Linux system to
market and then support it through its lifecycle. How can these OEMs
better participate in the community and how can the community better
assist the OEMs.
        - Tracks for strategic focus areas/technical gaps where we want to
assemble the key decision makers, maintainers and stakeholders and drive
consensus and action.
    - Set up the LF wiki to manage the evolving agenda and line up
presentations
    - Create and send out a presentation template to presenters
   - The LF has a modest travel fund to bring the right Desktop Architect
attendees to Austin.

- 2008 Desktop Events
    - We decided to focus our efforts on DAM and the October Linux
Plumbers conference.

- Linux Desktop News
   - IBM announced that it would be expanding the Open Collaboration
Client solution to support Ubuntu later in 2008.
   - I hate to plug just one vendor's (mine) viewpoint but it relates the
enterprise Linux desktop marketplace.

"IBM has increased support for Linux with the introduction of versions of
its Lotus Notes collaboration suite and Symphony productivity tools built
to run on the open source OS -- and it's hoping the effort will help
unseat Microsoft (NSDQ: MSFT) as the king of desktop software."
--InformationWeek

"Is Linux on the enterprise desktop finally ready for prime time? IBM
apparently thinks so as it prepares to deliver its next versions of Lotus
Notes enterprise collaboration software and Lotus Symphony office
productivity applications for the first time with full support for Ubuntu.
" --ComputerWorld

Inna Kuznetsova, cross-IBM executive for Linux, said “By providing an
alternative to the proprietary desktop model through one based on open
standards, businesses now have the freedom to select the proper mix of
software to help improve collaboration, increase end-user productivity,
and reduce total cost of ownership.” --Tectonic: Inna Kuznetsova
