XEmbed is actually quite powerful, in that it's rather painless to put any XWindow into any container. Couple that with DBus, and it's possible to do some pretty power stuff, though it doesn't help with OLE-type embedding. Till now, there has only really been Bonobo for this sort of task. The Gnome developers have been trying to get rid of it for years, and the other developers never really had reason to use it.
