How probably is it that the performance hit was caused by switching the
case of text as opposed to using complex borders and gradients on each
key? Not very.

Since late October, I've been using the ZTE Open as my sole mobile
phone and haven't noticed any significant improvements in the keyboard
change that would necessitate removing user desired functionality.

Other than "iOS does it", I haven't seen anything from a real world
user's perspective as to why this change is necessary.

Perhaps all of the decision makers have iOS devices, perhaps not. What
I do know, is that functionality that I appreciate has been removed and
there is no option to re-enable that functionality.
