Hello!

As many of you already know, the UX team has been working with engineering to
build out app grouping for the homescreen. Prior to today's build, app grouping
was enabled from the developer settings. Starting with tonight's nightly build
( and active on any build from current master Gaia) , app grouping is enabled
by default on the homescreen.

Many of you have already provided feedback (thank you!) which we've
incorporated into the design. If you have any additional feedback or questions,
please post it in our etherpad. We'll continue to monitor and respond to your
thoughts and comments there.

While the main interactions and visual designs are close to complete, there is
a known platform bug that does cause some performance 'jankiness'. This will be
fixed for 2.2 [ https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=927349 ]

To get access:
Flash your phone with master - app grouping is now part of the current build.

Included below is the rationale for the some of the design decisions we’ve
made, please take the time to read through it as most common questions will
have answers there.

Rationale :
Why are we implementing groups?

    * We've seen from user testing that there is a wide spread in how users
modify their homescreens and want to give FxOS users the option to better
organize their apps and bookmarks.
    * Our 2.0 vertical homescreen effectively removed pagination. Groups will
help give structure for users who would like it.
    * App grouping is a top partner request.
Why don't we use folders like other mobile operating systems do?

    * The inline group proposal is designed to complement the vertical home
screen.
    * Inline groups help the user by providing visual dividers and are more
flexible than modular groups because of the ability to leave a group
"collapsed" or "expanded".
Why are all apps in groups?

    * We decided to have all apps belong to a group to not break the pattern
we've already introduced with dividers.
    * It's a simpler concept both from the design and technical side and the
design will be light enough to not force organization on the user.
What's the benefit of collapsing and expanding groups?

    * Our inline groups will allow the user to leave a group open (expanded) or
closed (collapsed). This adds more options for a homescreen layout that can the
user can optimize based on their current needs.
    * For example, a user may have a group of travel apps that are only used
when they are going somewhere. They can leave the travel group expanded during
transit and then collapse and hide it away when they have arrived.
