It turns out this isn't completely correct. Standard Microsystems
Corporation did use SMC in the 1990s when they produced complete NICs
(e.g., the SMC EtherEZ 8416BTA). By the beginning of the 2000s they
sold only networking ICs, not complete NICs, and exclusively used the
SMSC name. The SMSC name was firmly established by the time the
LAN8700 was introduced.
