This should be better in recent Nightly builds. The arrows are gone
now in sidebar mode, like this screenshot[1].

You can also use the "wrench" icon in the main toolbar, it means
"toggle toolbox". Neither the wrench or the toolbox X are obvious, so
I understand the confusion.
