the goal of the project at the moment is to help KaiOS update their system and phones to a modern Gecko. While KaiOS is a fork of Firefox OS it's very different; it's designed to work on smart feature phones with physical keyboards. Old Firefox OS phones are certainly incompatible with it.
Is that it the real blocker? I mean, somebody will probably be willing/able to "fake" the keyboard ...
But anyway, say I buy a KaiOS device now, would I be able to build from source (except driver blobs), install it and start experimenting? I guess Mozilla will release the code later, but right now, and given this partnership, is it possible?
However if you're looking for a system to modernize your old devices I recommend trying PostmarketOS [1] which is a fantastic, community-driven effort.
My flame used to boot alright with it, but it's not going to make calls anytime soon ...
I also recommend it for people trying to inject new life in old devices. It's a great project.
