Sadly it still works for quite a lot of shops since a lot of shop owner just won't upgrade or forget to update the .htaccess files (own redirects etc.).
For new systems, you can determine at least the major version by checking the presence of files, i.e. < 4.7 -> /application, < 4.8 has a file called pkg. info, it's 403 but if it's there it's 4.8 etc. If you are really into it, you can check the changelog for other removed/added files etc..
