If you look in your log files there should be another exception before yours. You should see there error message starting with "Couln't instantiate email type:". Once you find that error, can you paste it to pastebin or similar service and post the link here?
Another thing to try is to leave mailType set to null. Simple mail renderer is the default type so it would be used even when you don't specify anything.
