Hello Seth,
to answer your questions in short:

A while back, I remember a thread about developing delivery templates
in FreeMarker and Velocity. At the time, the word was that support
for these templating languages would be introduced in 3.2 (now 3.5).
Has this been implemented?
Yes. You can add template renderers as well as paragraph renderers
through the Magnolia Admin Central. Configurations are located at
- config:/modules/templating/template-renders i.e.
- config:/modules/templating/paragraph-renders
With that mechanism in place you can plug-in any custom rendering
technology you want.
FYI, Magnolia 3.5.2 is shipped with the following implementations:
- Template renderers: JSP (works as is for JSF), Servlet
- Paragraph renderers: JSP, PlainText, FreeMarker
I see on the wiki that there is talk about
using JSF on the view tier. Is that the direction Magnolia is moving?
First, note that the Wiki entry "MagnoliaJSF" is not up-to-date
anymore and will be updated very soon.
Second, we're currently evaluating different view technologies.
Definitely, JSF is one of the major ones that we're putting an eye on
as it is a "natural" successor of JSP for building web UIs. Beside
investigating approaches on how Magnolia's back-end GUI can evolute
we also consider on how technologies can ease front-end development,
e.g. enhance development of AJAX enabled sites. However, all this is
currently work-in progress and documentation will follow.
In the meantime, if you want to see Magnolia-JSF integration in
action you can check-out the JSF integration project from our
sandbox: http://svn.magnolia.info/svn/sandbox/magnolia-jsf/trunk/ and
build it using maven.
Thanks,
Seth
Hope that helps.
Kind regards,
Vivian Steller
