It would be very helpful.  I use only ISO 8601 for human display
anyway, so I need to convert it regardless.  Other people will surely
want to display in their national format.  Scripting is made
dramatically easier with machine-readable format.

In Perl, converting from POSIX.1 time_t format to human-readable
format is just a matter of "scalar localtimme $t", whereas converting
the other way requires a significant amount of code.
