there is no way to those numbers except from the registry. You would have
to buy all the whois databases from all the registrars (and I understand
some are not selling even though they are required to do so). As far as I
know the registry whois database is not available and that is the only place
that has the correct numbers.
I also find it hard to believ that there are 8 million or so doms without
nameservers in the root. NSI has about 1,000 - 2,000 for a could of years.
Most of the rest are from a few new registrars who enter domains w/o
namservers but I don't think it will be anywhere near 8 million.

Russ, my numbers are on only what's in the com.zone.gz file only. Yes,
domains like two.com and other parked domains aren't in the zone file,
but are technically active domains. As for who has the correct real
count, I would suspect www.whois.net is probibly correct but one would
have to have access to the whois database to determine that and not just
the zone files.
