Domain direct is using Namebrain.
I highly recommend it.
But it does have limitations worth noting.
It does NOT query real time availability on the initial check. It
only does that when you add the domain to your shopping cart, and it
won't let you add it if it is not available. The availability check
it does is done off a local database that is several GB large.
Essentially, it is a local copy of the domains that are in the gTLD
dns zones. So that means it is possible for recently registered
domains, domains on hold, and domains which have no nameservers, to
show as available on the initial search, but not be really available.
But the trade off in speed, and the related keywords searches, is more
than worth it, and the templates they provide explain the discrepancy
well enough when it occurs.
