(Disclaimer: I don't mean to sound rude, but I realize it's possible I may
come across as that.)

Was there any announcement that this source was patched and that a newer
version was available for download? (In fact, is there an OpenSRS list
that has announcements about new API documents or perl client tarballs?)

If I went out and downloaded the initial tarball for 2.53, I would have
never found out that it had been patched and updated without your
mentioning it earlier. If I just look at the downloads page, the version
number is the only thing I have to go by as to whether or not it has been
updated. By keeping the same version number, I assume there has been no
change and keep going. There isn't even a mention about a patch or a link
to the URL you provided above that I can see. Even that would be enough
to make me realize 'Hey, there's something I need to do'. (Or, the short
version is: if you change something, change the version number. If you
don't change the version number (even tacking on a .1 would have worked)
for a small change, why bother changing it for a larger one? :) )

Sincerely,
