It's a very nice offer -- as are the other suggestions. Trouble is, people offer free resources, and then the cost of providing them or the work involved in maintaining them gets excessive. Then they go away.
Or, they move from one domain to another, without warning, and they appear to go away. So, given that this is the developers' list, and if you make your own you control your own. The WHOIS protocol is described in RFC-954. It's very simple. Telnet to port 43, send the domain name, get back a response. The response will be a whole bunch of text. If you go to whois.crsnic.net, the only thing you are interested in is a line that says "Whois Server: whois.opensrs.net" -- this tells you the registrar's whois. Discard the rest, repeat the query using the server above, and you're done. If you don't see "Whois Server:" then you're probably done. You will need a table of top-level-domains, and the associated whois server. Not all top-level domains have them. You can test this with your favorite telnet client.
