On boot, 3.3 (2.6.10 kernel) loads the snd_intel8x0 sound module which is totally wrong for this machine and naturally non-functional.  Machine requires the snd_cs4236 module which cannot be installed in 3.3 either by alsaconf or modprobe.  Both approaches report no such device.

Sound has long been functional on this machine running 2004.03 upgraded to and kept current with Debian unstable, using 2.6.7 and 2.6.9 kernels compiled by myself, and presently using the 2.6.10 kernel compiled by Josh, downloaded from the dotmepis web site.

Interestingly, my old Aptiva uses the same snd_cs4236 module and alsaconf handles it perfectly - no problems getting sound operational on that machine at all.  However, it has a similar issue with its ISA Lucent winmodem (original equipment) in that a modprobe of ltserial reports no such device, despite it having been enabled at boot and reported as such by isapnp.  That modem has operated perfectly fine in the past with the ltmodem & ltserial modules.  Fortunately, it isn't an issue for me as the machine is networked and connects to the internet using DSL.
