I've never seen column-span as particularly integral to the set of features in the spec. (The version in the early spec drafts was unimplementable; it was removed in the 2005 working draft and then a simpler version returned in 2007.) It's also always felt to me like an additional feature on top of the other column support (which we've been shipping with a prefix since 2005 or so; see bug 251162). The use cases for column-span that I've seen have also felt like workarounds for lack of proper section markup.
