Hi, I'm trying to figure out (for testing purposes only -- I need to
verify a certificate on a POP3 server) if there's a way to override
Firefox 3's internal port blocking.

The port in question is 995, which is POP3/secure.

Of course, I'd very much like to understand why this happens:

"Port Restricted for Security Reasons

This address uses a network port which is normally used for purposes
other than Web browsing. Firefox has canceled the request for your
protection.

The requested address specified a port (e.g. "mozilla.org:80" for port
80 on mozilla.org) normally used for purposes other than Web browsing.
The browser has canceled the request for your protection and
security."

with a "Try Again" button.

Note that I have safebrowsing DISABLED. I cannot find any setting to
allow me to connect to arbitrary ports and override Firefox's
well-meaning but thoroughly infuriating attempts to keep me safe in
the light of something that I know is a technical misuse.
