I can't speak for the developers, but the project doesn't seem dead to me. I have posted a few questions over the last couple of months and always got a quick response. Also, the latest release is from March 2009 (pretty recent):

As far as I know, Rhino has nothing to do with the JS engine used in FF. Rhino is a means for executing JS code in a JVM.
