Hi Chris,

Thanks very much for your message. At first glance it sounds like your problem
might be font related, does the font in question validate properly in FontBook?
Is it a TrueType or OpenType font?

Beyond this, it would be really helpful if you log a bug in bugzilla with a
specific example (i.e. example page, screenshot on mac os x, screenshot on
windows), that way we can track the issue and figure out a solution. Let me
know if you have any questions about this or need any help.

If you use IRC, the #bidi channel at irc.mozilla.org is where developers who
work in this area hang out. Simon Montagu (smontagu) is probably the best
person to chat with regarding this. He's based in Jerusalem, so you can
probably chat with him first thing in your morning.

Subject: Complex script rendering in Gran Paradiso/Firefox 3.

I'm the transcriber of the Hebrew bible into Unicode/XML at

http://www.tanach.us/Tanach.xml

Hebrew text, a right-to-left text with complex markings, has terrible
rendering problems. At present, Mac OS X is the only system on which
Firefox doesn't yield satisfactory rendering. In fact, it doesn't even
recognize the font. If someone knows a trick to get any version of
Firefox rendering Hebrew on Mac OS X, I'd be glad to pass it on to site
viewers.

With Firefox 2 on Linux systems, improved rendering is obtainable by
using Pango via export MOZ_ENABLE_PANGO=1. Rendering is perfect on all
Windows systems from 2000 and above.

On Mac OS X recent pre-releases of Gran Paradiso recognize the required
font, but the rendering is characteristic of not having Pango enabled.
Is there a config or command line option that I can use to improve
Hebrew text rendering on Gran Paradiso on Mac OS X?

Thanks,

Chris Kimball

P.S. http://www.tanach.us/Fonts/FontTest.html shows examples of correct
rendering.
