There was a time, years ago, when there were numerous public ldap servers.
You could type an ldap or ldaps URL into your browser, and it would
present your query to the ldap server and show you the response.
I wanted to test that recently, to see (and demonstrate) that it still works.
But I don't know of any public ldap servers any more. Are there any?
A Google search for "list of public ldap servers" pulled up a few
promising pages. Many LDAP servers (mostly university ones) are listed
here:
http://www.emailman.com/ldap/public.html
I am not sure how accurate that list is, but I am sure you can find some
for testing. There is always the University of Michigan server, e.g.,
ldap://ldap.itd.umich.edu/dc=umich,dc=edu??sub?uid=mcs
Unfortunately, support for LDAP URLs is not a feature of any of the
Mozilla era browsers.
