Detect attribute value type?

Is there a way to detect whether an attribute value is binary versus 
string, or must I expect a particular attribute value to be one or the 
other?

It would be handy to be able to dynamically branch between 
ldap_get_values() and ldap_get_values_len().

This isn't an urgent question, but would be helpful.
