I don't have the answer, but these links may put you in the right direction:

https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/The_Necko_HTTP_module
http://dxr.mozilla.org/mozilla-central/source/netwerk/protocol/http/nsHttpDigestAuth.cpp

Hope that helps,

This list is peer support for end users of Firefox. Unfortunately, I
don't know the answers to your questions, and probably no one else on
support-firefox does either.

You might try the engagement-developers list,
<https://lists.mozilla.org/listinfo/engagement-developers>. That's
not really the right place to ask, but hopefully someone there will be
happy to tell you what*is* the right place to ask.

I'm crossposting to that list -- in case you'd liked to watch for
replies on the web instead of subscribing to yet another list, use
<https://groups.google.com/forum/#!forum/mozilla.engagement.developers>.
