That page doesn't mention anything about which compile flags are
needed for an external build. I ended up using these:
-Wno-ctor-dtor-privacy -Wno-non-virtual-dtor -fno-rtti 
-fno-exceptions -pthread -pipe -fshort-wchar

I had to ask on the list about -fno-tti since I don't normally use it
and I couldn't figure out from the link errors that I needed it.

This is probably documented somewhere in the wiki but I couldn't find it.
