I have built xulrunner, but only to for generating the pyxpcom binaries. I
use the release versions of xulrunner for my apps. I also have multiple XUL
apps running off the same runtime.

I have got it to work. I bundle the chrome into a jar, so was also bundling
the icon into the jar. It works if I put the icon at a path
/icons/default/<my_app_id>.ico off the chrome directory and reference it in
application.ini with the path /chrome/icons/default/<my_app_id>

Thanks for the responses and suggestions.

If you build xulrunner yourself you can just replace the xulrunner.ico to
what ever image you want.
