You might be interested in a paper I wrote, "misconceptions about W3C widgets":
http://marcosc.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/Misconceptions-about-W3C-Widgets.pdf
It covers the following misconceptions:
* Widgets reinvent the wheel
* JSON is easier than XML
* XML Digital Signatures is too hard to implement
* Widgets lack an origin
* Widgets lack a security model
Might clarify a few things, particularly about any complexity aspects when
compared to alternative formats - and also why certain decisions where made
when the spec was authored. Also, please note that the API didn't do anything
except retrieve values that were inside the config.xml file (i.e., it's
probably one of the simplest APIs ever :)).
