I meant to make the PR against 1.8, but forgot. I will merge it into 1.8
after review. The key shortening change can not go into 1.6 and 1.7. The
changes for using stats to find better keys to put in the index could be made
in 1.6 and 1.7. I commented about this on the issue and opened another issue
for 1.6 and 1.7.
