I think that your "bigger concern" described just above the stack trace is the 
more important issue here, and I think that fixing that should make your patch 
(which just deals with the fallout when that fundamental failure occurs) 
unnecessary.  So I'd recommend that we fix the underlying issue in this JIRA 
(in 5.11) rather than using the supplied patch to Band-Aid the symptoms and 
submitting a separate JIRA for the underlying issue, unless for some reason 
it's not possible to get the underlying issue fixed for 5.11.
