No, I can't exactly tell you what triggers the problems inside the JIT (or IBM's VM, if it is not the JIT) - some kind of bad optimization by the JIT, I'd guess. The "strange" bytes you see is a calculated size, this is really a very simple calculation (a subtraction of two longs) that seems to get wrong results on your VM.
