may be we don't disagree: "not only an API client, but with the knowledge to dive in the source code" meant that the documentation writer must have a *deep* knowledge of the API (which you get not simply by reading its specification, but working the API) and *some* knowledge about its specification (because he may need to know the internals in order to understand how something works).
