The current method is definitely going to be hard for anyone to discover on
their own without any visual feedback.
There probably aren't any great ways to do this without completely changing
the current tool style. The simplest approach is probably the context menu,
either to create a recursive activation as you mentioned or with something
like:
Create Self -> Call Message
Return Message
etc ...
Alternatively (additionally?) a key modifier (Shift, Ctrl, etc) on the
drawing command which indicates a self message (or a more general "advanced"
drawing mode).
