Neither you nor your students need to register for accounts. Using the 'guest' account should work. Most of the Tigris documentation says to use an empty password, but in testing it looks like any password is accepted (I tried "", "guest", and "foo" successfully). It's possible you ran into some intermittent problem in the SVN hosting. As Dave suggested, you really want to be working from a stable snapshot (tag or branch). If I were to suggest one, it would probably be http://argouml.tigris.org/svn/argouml/branches/BRANCH_0_26_x which is the maintenance branch for the 0.26.1 release. It contains low risk, high impact bug fixes that were found after 0.26 was released.
