phew, it's hard to keep up with the amount of your mails, but I like it!

What I don't understand is the impact on the current appearence of diagrams. Is 
SVG used to persist the diagrams? So, GEF objects are read/written in SVG 
format using Batik, which drawing/printing/imaging is done with GEF (not using 
Graphics2d)?
But then I don't understand how this will benefit from the fill gradients you 
mentioned.
