Yes, especially if the API is not really part of the donation so that things 
can be tracked.  Whenever you commit an API which is not copyrighted by the 
ASF, it would be better to include a pointer to the original code (github if 
it's there) in the commit message (as we're currently discussing on legal@) so 
that we can clearly identify the copyright owner.
