I'm curious about these portions of what you've said.

Could you share what you have tried and what roadblocks you're hitting? Are you 
struggling with mutability? How are you representing your data? You mention 
heapq, but it's not clear if you're using an adjacency matrix or adjacency 
lists or if you're using a more normalized relational format.
