Have just completed some reshuffling of content in the CVS. This is mainly related to the seperation of API classes from SPI classes in the composition package. This seperation is actually looking rather good and I think that we may be able to avoid any special classloader requirements. Anyway, getting from where we were to where we are has taken a lot of cutting and shunting in CVS and while things may be working nicely here on my machine, it may not work for you - so please do a CVS update and don't heistate to report any build releated problems.
Finally, a special note for Aaron .. you may want to take a look at the interfaces in merlin/activation-api named LifecycleCreateExtension and LifecycleDestroyExtension.
