Welcome to specification land! Or should I say the land without specifications... This is one out of a few dozen inaccuracies in the AF4, which I would like to sort out one by one. The current "spec" would probably be; Container+Component dependent, at least for case2. That would mean 4. in your list, and that the component author has to list what the result is for each container the component can run in, and for each LifeStyle (I guess). It is not acceptable from an interoperable point of view, but is a fact of life.
